Competitiveness: OECD How's life? report: Volunteering makes 2% of GDP per year

 

On 13 October, OECD published their How's life report measuring well-being in the member states and partner countries, capturing both material well-being (such as income, jobs and housing) and the broader quality of people’s lives (such as their health, education, work-life balance, environment, social connections, civic engagement, subjective well-being and safety). "One striking finding shown in this report is just how different the well-being outcomes can be in countries with very similar levels of GDP per capita."
 

...Looking at child well-being for the first time, the report shows how children from more affluent backgrounds tend to have better health and a happier school life. Children from less well-off families find fewer of their classmates to be kind and helpful and are more likely to be bullied at school. Life satisfaction, reading and problem-solving skills, communication with parents and intentions to vote in national elections in later life are all lower among children from less affluent backgrounds. Growing inequality among parents ends up sapping opportunities available to their children...

Also, How’s Life? report highlights the importance of volunteering, finding that it makes a significant contribution to well-being – both for society at large and for volunteers themselves. Unpaid, socially useful work for the community produces goods and services that are not captured by conventional economic statistics, and whose value amounts to around 2% of GDP on average in the OECD....Read more.
