It became clear early that the 2016 Presidential election was to be a contest pitting Donald Trump against the Republican Party and the Democratic establishment led by Hillary Clinton against another outsider promising to renew the ideals of progressive government.
Trump has won. In ways hard to imagine just a few months ago, the celebrity mogul has shredded the longtime belief that money, loyalty and a litmus test of conservative values determined who the Republicans would choose as their candidate. Trump eschewed the party’s vast fundraising network, spent less than his opponents, refused to pledge himself to the party if he lost (or won), and (aside from his position on immigration) took positions that were on the weak edge of the party’s ideology.
