UN Habitat in Prague: J.Gehl: First we shape the cities – then they shape us | Smart cities, smart citizens, smart communities and mayors

At the UN Habitat III conference held on March 16-18, 2016 in Prague, the organisation presented outlook and future trends in urban development: 1. UNECE cities are subject to concentration and sprawl. With ageing & migration, favouring compactness is key to supporting equity, integration and cohesion in our societies. 2. The knowledge city flourishes around scientific and educational excellence, is fueled by the digital revolution and demands mixeduse & integrated cities. Increased imperative for collaboration,consensus & positive action between government, stakeholders & the community. 3. Trend to people-centred and integrated planning is driving action towards resilient, connected, integrated & compact cities. 4. Post-Paris – widespread consensus for renewed action on climate change. Czech Rep largely compliant with OECD tax transparency standard, improvements needed | Czechs do not like tax evasion by corporations, see inequality in possibility to circumvent, determine (tax) rules - study

OECD data show the Czech Republic is „largely compliant“ with the international standard for exchange of information on request and transparency objectives of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes. Improvements should be made in the areas of availability of information on ownership, access to information/access powers, and exchange of information/rights and safeguards, for example. According to a survey conducted by the Median agency for the Glopolis think-tank, almost 60% of Czech respondents think that it is big corporations who is responsible for the greatest part of tax evasion in the Czech Republic.

This is the biggest week of the primary campaign for both the Republicans and Democrats. This week marks a shift in the way delegates are awarded. Up until now, every primary and caucus except South Carolina has awarded delegates proportionally. This allowed all major candidates to accumulate votes. Starting today, the primaries shift heavily into winner-take-all contests. Second place no longer means much at all.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016: Czech VŠB-Technical university of Ostrava among top universities

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016 placed VŠB-technical university of Ostrava among  top universities. High quality of education, research and technical equipment (supercomputer) are among the reasons for the success of the university. The university is the only Czech university in the ranking. Also, Czechs consider Czech science to be world-class, CVVM agency informed.
